Signs It's Time to Replace Your AC (Not Just Repair)

Utah summers are brutal on air conditioners. If you're seeing any of these signs, it's usually cheaper long-term to replace than to keep repairing:

  • Your AC is 12+ years old. Most Utah AC condensers last 12–15 years. R-22 refrigerant systems (pre-2010) are especially expensive to repair now.
  • Repair costs approaching $1,000+. Compressors, evaporator coils, and control boards are big-ticket items. Sinking money into an old unit rarely pays off.
  • Runs constantly on hot days but never cools the house. Undersized, aging, or refrigerant-leaking systems can't keep up with 95°+ days. Replacement fixes it.
  • Utility bills spike in summer. A 20-year-old SEER 10 unit vs a modern SEER 15–20 unit can cut cooling costs 30–50%.
  • Uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 was phased out. Refills cost 3–5x what they used to. Replacement is more cost-effective long-term.
  • Loud, rattling, or leaking around the outdoor unit. Refrigerant leaks, worn fan motors, failed capacitors — the fixes stack up.

Not sure? Call us for a free in-home assessment. If a $200 repair is the right answer instead of a $6,000 replacement, we'll say so.

What AC Replacement Costs in Utah

Real ranges — no dodging.

Basic 14–15 SEER2 AC Condenser

Typical: $4,000 – $6,000 installed

Reliable entry-level replacement for a smaller home or supplemental system. Meets current federal minimum efficiency.

Mid-Efficiency 16–17 SEER2 AC

Typical: $5,500 – $8,500 installed

Best value for most Utah homes. Two-stage compressor, better dehumidification, quieter. Saves ~20–25% on cooling bills vs older 10 SEER units.

Premium 18–22 SEER2 Variable-Speed AC

Typical: $7,500 – $11,500 installed

Top-tier comfort and efficiency. Variable-speed compressor modulates to actual demand. Best for larger homes or homeowners planning to stay 10+ years.

Ranges above include the outdoor condenser, matched indoor coil, refrigerant line service, electrical hookup, labor, permit, disposal of the old unit, and startup. Full-system furnace + AC replacements typically cost $9,000–$16,000.

Timing Matters — Don't Wait for July

The best time to replace an aging AC is spring or fall, when we're not slammed with emergency calls. Replace in April/May before it hits 90°, or in September/October after peak season. Faster scheduling, more time to compare options, less stress if the install runs long.

If your AC is already dead in July? We still get to you fast — usually within 24–48 hours.

AC Replacement FAQs

How much does a new AC cost in Utah?

For a typical Utah home, a full AC replacement (condenser + matched indoor coil) runs $5,000–$8,500 installed for a good mid-efficiency 16 SEER2 unit. Basic 14 SEER2 units start around $4,000; premium variable-speed units run $8,000–$11,500. Full furnace + AC combined replacements typically run $9,000–$16,000. Free in-home estimate confirms your exact number.

How long does an AC last in Utah?

Most residential ACs last 12–15 years in Utah. Our climate is hard on outdoor units (heat, dust, occasional hail). Well-maintained units can push 18–20 years, but efficiency drops significantly past 12.

Should I replace my AC and furnace together?

Usually yes, if both are past 10–12 years old. Matched systems perform better and warranty terms are stronger when installed together. Combined install also saves 15–20% vs replacing them separately later.

Do I have to replace the indoor coil too?

Almost always, yes. Modern AC condensers use different refrigerant (R-410A / R-454B) than older systems (R-22). Mixing old and new components tanks efficiency and voids warranty. We include the coil in our quotes upfront.

What size AC do I need?

Depends on square footage, insulation, windows, and orientation. A load calculation (Manual J) gives the real answer. Oversized ACs short-cycle, don't dehumidify well, and cost more. Undersized ACs run non-stop in July. We size it right before quoting.

Do you handle the permit?

Yes — we pull the mechanical permit and schedule the inspection.

Can I replace just the outdoor unit?

Not usually. Refrigerant compatibility, matched capacity, and warranty terms all require indoor + outdoor as a set. Anyone quoting "just the condenser" for an old system is cutting corners.

What warranty comes with a new AC?

10-year parts warranty is standard on modern units. Premium units go 12 years. We back our installation labor separately.
